The diverse city community of DeKalb has humble origins as a village incorporated in 1856 under the name Huntley's Grove. The name was eventually changed to DeKalb later after the city's inclusion in DeKalb County, which was named for the famous war hero Baron Johann DeKalb. Located within a few hours' drive of Chicago, Aurora, and Rockford, DeKalb is centrally-located, with close proximity to I-88 and I-39. Additionally, Route 38, also known as the historic Lincoln Highway, runs through the heart of DeKalb.
DeKalb's claims to fame are just as varied and diverse as its population. The "father of barbed wire" was born here and developed the first barbed wire fence company. Northern Illinois University was founded here as far back as 1895. Also, DeKalb is one of few cities to have an official city-sanctioned band, referred to as the DeKalb Municipal Band; this tradition began when the band was initially founded by musicians coming back from the California Gold Rush 155 years ago.
There are a number of things to do in DeKalb. The Whiskey Acres Distilling Company is open for tours and anyone looking for good local drinks. If you're looking for something a bit more family-friendly, DeKalb is loaded with recreational parks, such as Shabbona Lake State Park, which allows boat rentals and has easy hiking trails for an outdoor stroll.
Local arcade Star Worlds Arcade provides a nostalgic and old-fashioned atmosphere for people who still want to leave the house to play video games, or even just take in the novelty of going to an old-school arcade. Star Worlds puts effort into maintaining their image, providing plenty of retro games for the ultimate experience.
DeKalb is also filled to the brim with golf courses for those of you with a taste for the green -- try Buena Vista or River Heights. No matter what you do, you can finish off a day trip with a stop at a local restaurant for a bite to eat; Molly's Eatery & Drinkery draws business from the local college crowd, and Eduardo's is a great choice if you like Mexican cuisine.
